Become a designer with Canva: How to make a YouTube thumbnail

It is easy when you know how.

Creating stylish and eye-catching designs can seem to be an impossible task for those who struggled with art in school. You may feel like you need to have lots of experience and special design skills to create what you want, whether it’s for a leaflet, logo, header, or a simple video thumbnail.

However, even the most inexperienced designer can create impressive products on Canva! Canva is a free resource which is very easy to use. It provides templates for a range of items that you can edit and personalise to make your vision a reality.

These 5 steps will help get you on your way to creating the designs you want. We focus specifically on how to create that eye-catching YouTube thumbnail that will draw in viewers to your video.

Create your account

You won’t be able to get anywhere without an account! Making an account on Canva is free, and you can even log in using Facebook. There’s not much else to say on this, so let’s get to the designing!

Decide what you want to make

Once you’ve logged in you will be able to choose from a wide range of templates, depending on what you want to create. You can choose from flyers, posters, social media posts, and of course a YouTube thumbnail. These templates will make sure the design is in the correct size and dimensions. There is an option to custom design if you know the necessary numbers, but if a template is there you may as well use it!

Pick your layout

Canva offers many different layout designs/themes that you can use as a basis for your thumbnail. You have to pay for some of these options but there is a wide selection of free choices that should cover most people’s needs! Once you’ve chosen a layout, you can then edit and adapt the different elements to build your own personalised thumbnail.

Find a picture

As you will probably want to make the thumbnail relevant to the video, editing and personalising the basic layout is the next task! You can change the picture by choosing from a free stock image or uploading your own image. The image can then be moved around and be made smaller/bigger to make it look exactly how you want it.

Want to write something?

If you want text on the thumbnail, you can easily edit the text provided in the basic layout. The sizing and positioning of it can then be changed to fit with the picture. You are also able to edit/remove any other parts of the layout to put the final touches to your thumbnail.

By following these simple steps, creating an attractive and distinctive YouTube thumbnail is easy, quick, and free! Canva is a simple programme to use that can give you many different options to suit your purpose. So, it’s time to stop making do with a pre-set thumbnail, even if you doubt your creative skills. Create your own and stand out from the crowd with your designs!
